Reimagining School: MNVA Sparks Innovation in Minnesota 

Students in southeastern Minnesota aren’t just learning about the real world – they’re actively shaping it. Innovative education initiatives are taking root in southeastern Minnesota, where Houston Public Schools, in partnership with Minnesota Virtual Academy (MNVA) and local districts like Spring Grove and Mabel-Canton, are shaking up the classroom and taking learning to the next level. One of the most exciting initiatives is a partnership with the Spring Grove Cinema. A new business owner is reimagining the space, incorporating a coffee shop and student union, and they’re turning to students for help! Students who participated in a design lab last year provided the initial concepts, and now, more students are involved in bringing those ideas to life. Working alongside the entrepreneur, they’re designing the space, creating budgets, ordering materials, developing schedules, and even gaining hands-on experience working at the business. While the business owner remains the driving force, students are gaining invaluable entrepreneurial and design experience. MNVA, along with the other participating schools, is integrating this project into their curricula, providing students with the mentorship and resources necessary for success. Teachers and local business leaders are mentoring students, offering guidance on everything from financial management to customer service. This collaborative approach ensures students gain valuable real-world experience while contributing directly to their community. 

Recognizing that not all learning happens in a classroom, these schools have teamed up with Southeast Technical College to offer something pretty cool: a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) certification program for high school seniors! Think of it: graduating high school and hitting the road with a valuable, in-demand skill! This program is a win-win, offering: 

• A solution to a real problem: It helps fill a need for skilled truck drivers in the area. 
• A ticket to a great career: Students earn a certification that opens doors to exciting job opportunities. 
• Learning that’s hands-on: Forget just sitting in a classroom – this course gets you behind the wheel! 
• A boost for the local economy: More skilled drivers mean a stronger, more vibrant region.
