Minnesota Online Education General FAQs

Minnesota Virtual Academy offers full-time and part-time enrollment for students in Kindergarten through grade 12.

The core courses are English/language arts, math, science, history, music, and art. There will also be other courses at the appropriate grade levels, such as world languages. High school students also have access to college-level courses, industry certifications, and work-based learning, as well as numerous elective courses.

Yes, we provide educational materials that are needed to complete the program. These books and materials are sent to students directly. The number of books and types of materials depends on the student’s grade level and courses. In general, middle school and high school students receive fewer books and materials than elementary school students.

Yes, we are a public school in Minnesota where students can earn a diploma issued by Minnesota Virtual Academy based upon successful completion and mastery of course content. We celebrate our students annually through an online and in-person graduation ceremony.

We believe in a balanced approach toward education. Computers help us provide you with effective assessment, planning, and time-management tools. Computers also act as powerful teaching tools that can motivate, stimulate, and inform children about the world around them. They do not, however, replace a solid education. Rather, they help facilitate one. That’s why we use a unique multimedia approach that also includes traditional books, workbooks, and instructional materials.

Students participate in a combination of teacher-led instruction, student-centered activities, and independent practice.

The beauty of our program is that it’s flexible enough to meet students where they are in any given subject and take them where they want to go. High school students have the opportunity to take more advanced courses, including honors and college-level courses.

Throughout the year, students will be invited to participate in school-wide events, including open house, MNVA Day, band and choir concerts, talent show, prom, and a variety of field trips. Our online social interactions include student clubs, virtual events, the K12 Zone, and online assemblies.

Students socially interact in their virtual classrooms including break-out sessions, team building, student projects, and student discussions.
